Are you feeling a burning sensation, numbness or pain in your lower back, buttocks, hips, or legs? You might be suffering from sciatica.
If you live near Attleboro, Dorchester, West Roxbury, Brockton, Taunton, Weymouth, Somerset, MA, you should consider contacting David Smith, DC, at Milton Chiropractic to find out more about what sciatica is and how you can treat it.
Sciatica is a condition that refers to pain that originates and radiates along the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve runs from your lower back and branches through your buttocks, hips and both legs. Sciatica occurs when something compresses part of the nerve. This can cause inflammation, pain, and some numbness. Depending on the situation, the discomfort can be moderate to severe, varying from a mild ache to a sharp pain, burning sensation, or excruciating pain. Sneezing, coughing, or prolonged sitting can aggravate the symptoms, and usually only one side of the body is affected.
There are many causes of sciatica. This includes ruptured or herniated disc, bone spurs on the spine, narrowing of the spine, Piriformis, which is cramping or spasms of the piriformis muscle, or similar lower back injuries. Pregnancy and childbirth can cause sciatica, as can non-spinal problems such as diabetes. Even sitting for lengths of time with your wallet in your back pocket can cause sciatica.
Your chiropracor Dr. Smith will probably suggest any of a number of treatment options to consider for relief from your sciatica. These could include but are not limited to:
- ·Ice/cold therapy, which reduces inflammation and can help control and alleviate pain.
- ·Ultrasound, which generates gentle heat through use of sound waves.
- ·Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) which uses controlled levels of electric current to stimulate muscles.
- ·Spinal manipulation/adjustments, in which the doctor adjusts the spine to help free restricted movement and restore misaligned vertebra. This is the core treatment option of chiropractic medicine.
